Nepenthes alata aka Pitcher Plant

Nepenthes alata, also known as the Hanging or Asian Pitcher Plant, is a tropical carnivorous plant native to the Philippines. Its nectar attracts insects which drown in the pitcher and are then digested by the plant. This species is highly polymorphic and its taxonomy is subject to revisions. The Nepenthes genus, which includes over 170 species, is known for its flamboyant and colorful appearance and extreme carnivory. In the wild, some Nepenthes plants have even been known to eat small vertebrates such as mice and rats. The genus has a vast natural range, spanning from Madagascar to Australia, and has adapted to countless forms. The Tropical Pitcher Plant, typically growing as a climbing or hanging vine, has a cup-shaped pitcher which is a modified leaf used to capture and digest insects. These plants grow in regions low in nitrogen and evolved carnivory as a clever solution. The pitchers come in different shapes and sizes to catch various types of insects.
